Charvel Model 2B Bass Black 1988

Charvel Model 2B Bass Black 1988

Charvel Model 2B, black, made in Japan 1988. This is a proper late eighties shred-machine bass, no doubt about it. Charvel was owned by Jackson in the late eighties, so both brands were largely made at the well regarded Chushin Gakki factory in Japan and built to a very consistent quality. This has a fast neck:  fairly flat in the back, tall frets, 13.75" radius board... similar to many of those 80s Superstrat style guitars in shape. Between that and the well balanced lightweight body, this is very easy to play. There's a few knocks and marks around the body, which adds some honest charm to the gloss black I reckon. In a mysterious twist, the headstock has been doctored to a less hazardous rounded end in place of the point... bit of a weird thing for the previous owner to do, there's probably a good story in there somewhere, but I can only guess: maybe it took someone's eye out one time? The tone is very workable: bright and punchy, heaps of grind on the J-style bridge pickup, heaps of natural lows and low mids on the P-style pickup... it's instantly satisfying and will anchor a mix nicely. These sometimes sell for twice this dollar, so nab yourself a little slice of the hair metal era for a bargain.

Model: Charvel Model 2B
Made: Japan, 1988 approx, Chushin Gakki plant (serial 294594)
Finish: black, gloss poly
Body: poplar
Neck: maple, satin finish w/ rosewood board, 13.75" radius, 34" scale, 41mm nut, slim D shape
Weight: 4.215kg
Mods: headstock cut down to be less pointy
Pickups: Charvel J 20 split single-coil, J150 single coil
Case: none

Cosmetic condition notes: mild finish wear. The headstock has had the pointy tip cut off and sanded to a rounded edge, as well as marks on the edges and the back and front. The neck is clean and smooth in the hands, plenty of dimples and scuffs on the back but nothing nasty. The back has widespread light scuffs and dimples but no major marks. The sides have dimples on both horns and the elbow area, as well as some scuffs and a chip near the jack. The front has scuffs and marks on the elbow area, near the knobs and standard play wear on the horns.  Overall: good condition (7/10).

Playing condition notes: Neck is straight, action is low, intonation is good, truss rod works. All electronics tested and working properly. Frets have minor wear only, 8/10 for life left. Setup with fresh 45/105 Moonshiners strings.
